Two
âHey sexy.â Tiffany Comeaux greeted her boyfriend with a kiss. She was wearing skimpy gym shorts and a tank top and hoped he noticed.
âHey yourself. Just get back from working out?â Gregory asked as he closed the door to her Common Street apartment.
âYeah,â she said, releasing her light brown hair from its ponytail. âBrutal yoga class today. Sometimes I wonder if itâs worth it. Iâm sore for days after.â
âWellâŚâ Gregory spun her around and smiled. âYouâre a hell of a lot more flexible in the bedroom.â
âTotally worth the pain then, babe.â She kissed him again, this time slower and longer. âHey? Thought you had a business dinner tonight?â
Exhaling, he pushed his thoughts of Arianne to the back of his mind. âItâs with friends. And I know itâs short notice⌠but⌠I⌠Iâd like you to come, Tiff.â
âAre you sure?â she said with a subtle smirk. Meeting his friends was a huge deal. âNo stomach ache, emergency at the hospital, or burst pipe at your momâs?â
Gregory rapidly nodded. âI deserved that. Mama really did have a burst pipe though.â He chuckled, taking her hand. âIâm sorry. It was wrong of me to ask you to meet my friends and then back out on it. Tonight, I really want you to go.â
âThen you need to help me get dressed,â she said, leading him into the bedroom.
âDoes that include helping you get undressed?â
âYou wish,â Tiffany teased, opening her closet door. âPick out something unpretentious and sexy. And then come talk to me while Iâm in the shower.â
âOkay, Iâm right behind you.â Gregory held up a pair of gray pants and a light pink spaghetti strap top, hoping it would meet her criteria. âHey Tiff?â
Tiffany poked her head out from behind the shower curtain. âGood choice, babe.â
âI pulled the matching cardigan too. Might get chilly if we go out on the patio.â
âYouâre right,â she said, returning to her shower. âWhoâs coming tonight?â
âJust the Huffs and the Douglases,â he said, leaning on the marble vanity.
âThe Huffs⌠as in Dr. Sylvia Huff? Doesnât she have a wife whoâs a nurse?â
âYeah. Lesley.â
âAre you close with them like you are Dr. Douglas and his wife?â
Gregory placed Tiffanyâs towel on the peg next to the shower. âOther than Andy, Syl is my closest friend.â
âYeah? Iâve only seen her once or twice. She seems standoffish, but I didnât talk to her or anything, so I could be wrong.â
He chuckled. âNah, youâre right. She doesnât have much to say. Ever. But when she does, you better listen.â
âSounds a little like you,â she said, turning off the shower. âHow long have yâall been friends?â
âAbout fourteen years. And yeah, weâre a lot alike. Sylviaâs harder to get to know though. Talk to her about your alma mater and youâre in.â
âDid she graduate from LSU?â Tiffany wrapped the towel around her body and opened the curtain. âThanks for getting my towel.â
âNo, but Lesley did and Sylviaâs developed a love for the Tigers.â
She planted a soft kiss on Gregoryâs cheek. âSmart lady. Do they have any kids?â
âTwin girls. And Les stays at home with them.â
âTwins? Really?â
Gregory stood taller and puffed his chest. âYeah, Stowe and Liene. Iâm their godfather.â
âI didnât know you had godchildren.â Tiffany grinned. âI bet youâre so much fun.â
âIâve had lots of practice for sure. All four of Andyâs kids too.â
âWow, six.â Steam flooded into the bedroom as he opened the door. âHow long have you known him?â
âAwhile. We knew of each other in high school. His dad was a doctor in Mandeville and worked at Rivers. But when the four of us went to med school at River City University, thatâs when we got to know each other.â
âFour?â
âMy brother Trent and Andyâs ex-wife Millie. They were two years behind us.â
âYou and Andrew have been best friends for a long time?â
Gregory lifted her chin. âTry longer than youâve been alive.â It was hard to admit, but maybe he was looking forward to her meeting everyone. âYou know youâre making life tough on this old man, standing there, taunting me in next to nothing.â
âOh really?â she asked, allowing the towel to fall. âYou might be older than me, but you are still⌠a man. A very hot⌠very handsome⌠and very turned-on⌠man.â Tiffany bit her bottom lip and unzipped his pants. âI donât know if I can wait all night, and I know for sure that you canât. Am I right, Dr. Adams?â
âI have amazing willpower. Youâd be surprised.â He swallowed hard as she pressed her bodyâwarm and still wet from her showerâinto him.
âReally?â Tiffany knelt down. âSo, if I stop, youâll be okay?â
âI think I would live⌠Tiff.â His voice was ragged. âBut I really, really wish you wouldnât⌠GodâŚâ
âDonât we have to be there soon?â She gazed at him with willing eyes.
âActually, now,â Gregory answered, hoping that wouldnât deter his young and beautiful girlfriend.
Standing, she kissed him hard and lifted his shirt. âWell, Doctor, I hope you work fast.â
âPike?â Arianne shouted, walking into her South Lake Drive home on the northeastern side of Metairie. âDad should be here soon to take you to your friendâs house.â Pike Douglas brushed dark hair from his face as he hopped down the stairs two at a time. âStop jumping down the stairs, Son.â
âCanât you or Greg take me, Mom?â Pike asked, laying his head on the kitchen counter.
âPike, he didnât mean to miss it.â
âThatâs what you said last time, and the time before that.â He muttered more to himself than anything.
She cursed her husband under her breath, thankful her back was turned so Pike couldnât see. Yet another time, Andrew had managed to hurt him with his absence. She had no doubt her husband loved their children, but sometimes she wondered if he loved himself more. âPike, Chief of Surgery is a big job with lots of responsibilities.â
âGreg is over the whole hospital and heâs always there. Even if itâs just for a few minutes at the end of the game, Mama.â He inhaled and Arianne could tell Pike was trying not to cry. âReece is in med school. Nash is a resident, and theyâve both come to some of my baseball games. Donât make excuses for him. Heâs just an asshole.â
âPike.â Arianne scolded, âI know youâre upset, but you will show respect.â
Lowering his head, he whispered, âYes maâam,â and stared at her with those deep brown eyes, hurt again because of another broken promise.
I know how you feel, son. I really do.
Twenty-six years of marriage to Dr. Andrew Douglas Jr. had prepared Arianne for talks like this with her young son. Sheâd had the same discussions for years with their other three children. The truth was harsh and sometimes it was too much for any thirteen-year-old to handle. Andrew and Arianneâs relationship had been plagued with lies from day one. Never allowing herself to forget that he was married when she started seeing him, Arianne knew he wouldnât be faithful for long. Twelve years into her marriage, she wasnât eitherâthe proof standing before her now with those big, brown eyes that matched his biological fatherâs. Neither of the two men suspected that Pike was Gregoryâs child, and Arianne wasnât telling. Fear and love kept that secret.
Gripping the shoulders of her third son, she kissed the top of his head. âNever doubt that Daddy loves you. I agree, he is a jerk sometimes.â She forced a laugh. âBut son, he does love you. He wanted to take you today to apologize for missing your game. Maybe go to Arctic Shark and get ice cream like you used to?â Arianne lied, relieved to see a grin on Pikeâs face as she spotted Andrewâs truck pulling up outside. âIs that one with all the candy bars still your favorite?â
âShark Attack? Yes maâam,â he said, returning to his usual cheery disposition.
âGood. Now run upstairs and get your clothes. Donât forget your toothbrushâyouâll need it after the Shark Attack.â
While Pike was lumbering up the stairs, she hurried outside to meet a smiling Andrew as he approached the side door.
âHey beautiful,â he said, leaning in for a kiss. âMissed you today.â
âCut the crap, Andrew. I donât know and I donât care where the hell you were last night. But your child does. So, you best come up with a damn good excuse as to why you missed his game,â Arianne fired off, on the verge of tears.
âI told you.â Andrew lifted his hands. âSoliciting contributions for your charity benefit, working late, charting, scheduling staff assignments.â
âThat might have worked when Pike was seven, but in case you havenât noticed, he has good reasoning skills now. You donât work twenty-four/seven, Andrew.â
âAre you making an accusation?â He ran his fingers through his salt and pepper hair.
âBecause Ari, Iâm not.â Andrewâs arms wrapped around his wife and he kissed her cheek.
âBaby, Iâm not. I love you. God, I love you. Only you, Ari.â
She searched his eyesâhazel with an amber rimâthe same eyes she fell in love with all those years before. Since then, heâd broken her heart, her trust, and their life together, but he was her husband and for better or worse she loved him.
âIâm sorry. I donât mean to accuse,â she apologized. âPike is upset. I was asleep when you got home last night, and you were gone before I woke up this morning. Iâm crazy busy with the Hope Benefit.â
âNo, youâre right. Thereâs no excuse for missing his games,â Andrew agreed, caressing her cheek.
âI told him youâd take him to Arctic Shark before you dropped him at his friendâs house,â Arianne said, burying her head in his chest, aware of how much she missed him.
Lifting her chin, he brushed stray strands of black hair behind her ear. âSounds like a plan to me. And what about you, Mrs. Douglas? How can I make up the past few weeks to you?â His kiss was slow and full of need, reminding her of the first time at his boathouse almost twenty-seven years ago. âMy God, you are the most beautiful woman in this world, Arianne.â
âOur son will be coming out soon. Letâs not scar him for life with a mental picture of his parents making out in the driveway.â
âAgreed. But tonight.â His eyes met hers, he kissed her again, this time taking her breath. âTonight is all about you.â
âMom?â The sound of Pikeâs voice caused them both to jump. âDo you know where my navy St. Paschalâs hoodie is?â
âIâm coming. In the dryer, I think,â Arianne yelled, walking towards the back door.
Andrew nodded. âOh sweetheart, do we have enough food for one more?â he asked as Arianne stepped into their house. âBecause Gregâs bringing the new girlfriend, the gal whoâs getting her Masterâs.â
Her mood shifted. A carefree night with friends just became a competition.
Fun facts
– LSU had to be in this book. We bleed purple and gold here in Louisiana. đđđ
– The twin’s names – Stowe and Liene – were inspired by one of my favorite actresses’ names, Madeleine Stowe. Liene is pronounced as you would say the end of the German word ‘Fräulein.’
– And the origin of Pike’s name is a secret until Book 2, but…it involves a historic landmark east of New Orleans. đ
– Andrew is such a jerk, but I have a soft spot in my heart for him. But y’all need to know, I DO think he’s a jerk.
That’s it for today!! Don’t forget to download your copy of the book and SHARE the link with friends!!
Happy Black Friday!!!!
